07/06/18 CAGTC: USDOT Releases Highway Freight Conditions and Performance Report

CAGTC Members,

Today, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) released its “Highway Freight Conditions and Performance Report to Congress.” This report was required by the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act and focuses on the National Highway Freight Network’s (NHFN) operation capacity, efficiency, and levels of congestion. You can find the full report online here and some key takeaways below:

  • FHWA identified the top 25 domestic freight corridors by connecting segments with the highest tonnage and known freight generators or population centers. These corridors are located across the country and can be found on page 23 of the report.
  • FHWA also identified the top 25 congested freight-significant locations on the NHFN. This list can be found on page 39.
  • While the originally designated NHFN contained 51,029 centerline miles, the report provides an updated version, using more recent Interstate mileage, that comprises 52,020 centerline miles of roadway.
  • 77 percent of NHFN miles were rated as “having a good ride quality,” while 19 percent were fair and 4 percent poor.
  • Around 4.3 percent of bridges on the NHFN are structurally deficient while the majority are 26 years old or older.
  • Travel time is becoming less predictable and the average travel speed has decreased in a majority of the corridors studied.
