02/16/17 CAGTC: Summary of 2/15/17 Commerce Surface Transportation Subcommittee Hearing

Dear CAGTC Members,

Yesterday, the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Infrastructure, Safety, and Security held a hearing titled “Moving America: Stakeholder Perspectives on our Multimodal Transportation System.” Representatives from BNSF Railway, Schneider National, Dow Chemical Company, and Amtrak testified.

Top takeaways:

  • Witnesses called for increased investment across the board for infrastructure and specifically requested increased user fees to fund the Highway Trust Fund as well as increased direct federal investment in projects. Witnesses identified specific issues, like congestion at ports and in major freight hubs, as being the most needed investments.
  • All witnesses called for the streamlining of regulations, testifying that many federal regulations are outdated or do not increase safety.
  • All witnesses encouraged the continued investment and usage of the multimodal freight system as a way to address congestion and improve American competitiveness.

Please find a detailed summary of witness statements and discussion relevant to CAGTC priorities here.

Thank you,
